THE YALTA CONFERENCE
  • Meeting near the end of WWII - big 3 meet to discuss post war Europe
  • Germany will be divided, controlled by the Allies
  • Liberated Eastern European countries will have new elections
  • United Nations will be formed
  • USSR is given great influence over Eastern Europe, and new government must be "Soviet freindly"

THE UNITED NATIONS
*formed after World War II
*meant to prevent another world war or large skill conflict in general by creating a large alliance between nations
* is responsible for solving many international problems
*there many different departments including the General Assembly
ECOSOC and the Security Council which all handle different parts of maintaining peace
*is involved in conflicts today such as Iraq
CONTAINMENT
*containment is the policy in which the US stops country’s ability to gain power on a international scale
*was first used in 1947 in order to combat communism spread by the Soviets
* is done both politically and economically to stop the influence of a country ideologically
*is most famously used in the Vietnam end Korean War’s to stop the spread of communism to these areas

THE TRUMAN DOCTRINE
*promised US aid to countries trying to resist threats to democratic freedom
*originally used to give international aid to Turkey and Greece to suppress a communist revolution
*would be the precursor to the Marshall plan
*would set up the US’s policy of containment through international aid during the Cold War
THE MARSHALL PLAN
*was a plan to give Europe 13 billion in aid to help rebuild
*this would hopefully stop the spread of communism to these areas as it is easier when people are suffering to introduced communism
*would eventually help jumpstart the US economy
*with the plan for US policy during the Cold War

HE BERLIN BLOCKADE AND AIRLIFT
*the Democratic countries decided to merge their sections of Germany and form West Germany
*thinking that this was a threat to Russia Stalin blockaded Berlin in hopes that the western powers would abandon it
*the US then ordered a massive airlift of supplies to Berlin until Stalin called off the blockade
NATO AND THE WARSAW PACT
*was a alliance including most Western powers against the threat of communism caused by the Soviet Union
*in response the Soviet Union and Eastern European nations formed their own alliance against the West through the Warsaw Pact
*differences between the US and its European allies has caused some disagreement in NATO
*after the fall of the Soviet Union in the former Soviet countries have petitioned and eventually been able to join NATO

THE RED SCARE, THE ROSENBERGS, AND HUAC
*during the Cold War there was a general fear of all Communists because people thought that they would try to spread their influence all over the world
*this led to many government officials being accused of passing information to the Soviets and cost them to lose their jobs be killed or even executed
*example of this would be the Rosenberg case in which a husband and wife were convicted and later executed for charges of passing information to the Soviets
*the House of un-American activities committee (HUAC) began targeting movie stars in Hollywood from possible connections to the Communist Party
*this would eventually lead to the ruining of the careers of these movie stars
COMMUNISM IN CHINA
*China fell to the Communists in 1949
*they then became headed by the Communist leader Mao Zedong
*fears of communism spreading in Asia led to the Korean War
*China later got involved in the Korean War because it’s all with the US is doing is a threat to its national security

*a McCarthyism is a false accusation against and a innocent person
*Joseph McCarthy used the Korean War to increase Americans fear of communists
*he claimed to have a list of 205 officials who were communists or had communistic connections
*later the Senate held hearings against McCarthy
*responded by making charges against one of the Army’s lawyers and people were shocked with his conduct
* even faded from public view

*the space race was a competition between the US and the Soviet Union in which each side of which was dominant
*this took the form of who could be the first to do what in space such as the US going to the moon
*it was started when the Russians launched the first satellite Sputnik
